Ms. Le Thi Tham, hamlet 5, Nghi Thuan harvests sticky corn before harvesting shallots.

Shallots are a high-value crop, with a crop lasting up to 9 months. Therefore, to “make ends meet”, farmers in Nghi Thuan commune (Nghi Loc) have intercropped waxy corn on the onion growing land awaiting harvest.

At this time, farmers in Nghi Thuan commune are actively harvesting corn. According to farmers, this year, despite the difficult weather, corn intercropped with onions still has a good harvest and good prices.

The family of Ms. Le Thi Tham - Hamlet 5, Nghi Thuan Commune, produces 1 sao of chives and intercrops with root cabbage, sweet cabbage and glutinous corn. After about 70 to 80 days, the corn is ready for harvest. On average, each sao of glutinous corn intercropped with chives also brings in an income of more than 20 million VND.

Ms. Tham excitedly said: "After harvesting the corn, I continue to take care of the onions to grow. Then I will prune the onion plants. That way, there will always be a harvest."

Growing shallots intercropped with waxy corn not only contributes to solving seasonal jobs for farming households but also increases winter crop income.

Corn intercropped with chives reaches over 20 million VND/sao.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan in Hamlet 6, Nghi Thuan Commune, said: Since switching to this intercropping model, on an area of one sao of colored land, all year round "not letting the land rest", the income is 3 times higher than growing rice. Up to now, the whole Nghi Thuan Commune has 80 hectares of area for growing shallots intercropped with other crops. Of which, nearly half is intercropped with glutinous corn. The main consumption markets are Nghi Loc, Cua Lo districts and Vinh City.

With the market price of corn from 3 to 4 thousand VND per ear, on average, each sao brings in an income of approximately 2 million VND. If we count the whole crop including vegetables, corn, and shallots, the income is over 22 million VND/sao.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Phuong - agricultural extension officer of Nghi Thuan commune - Nghi Loc said: "Although the weather is very difficult this year, the model of intercropping waxy corn in onion land still brings high income to people. The advantage of this method is that it takes advantage of the excess fertilizer in onion. This is a good method, next year we will continue to encourage farmers to expand this model."
