The Australian beef cattle farm in Nghi Lam commune is developing quite rapidly, bringing high economic efficiency with a total herd of more than 3,000 heads. The farm has signed a contract to purchase corn products from local farmers, so this year, hamlets 4, 5, 12 and 13 of Nghi Lam commune have converted 80 hectares of ineffective rice land to corn.
On average, each household grows from 2 to 5 sao. Corn is harvested about every 3 months, with an average yield of 40 tons/ha. Each harvest, about 3,200 tons of Nghi Lam corn are sold to Australian cattle farms, with a value equivalent to 2.7 billion VND/crop.
Ms. Tran Thi Nguyet, Hamlet 4, Nghi Lam Commune, said: When growing corn to sell as feed for the Australian cattle farm, the time is shorter (90 days), the planting density is higher, there is no need to process or preserve, so the income also increases. "This year, my family planted 2 sao of corn and sold nearly 4 tons of fresh corn. With a price of 900 VND/kg, the total revenue is 3.6 million VND, 1.5 times higher than growing corn for grain."
