(Baonghean.vn) - Western politicians believe that recognizing Crimea as Russian will require a change in the political elite. Meanwhile, Western countries refuse to recognize the status of the Russian peninsula because, in another context, they would have to abandon their plans to expand NATO to the East, and admit the complete failure of their military policy doctrine.

Waldemar Gerdt, a member of the German Federal Parliament, said: "As soon as the political elite in power is replaced in the West, I am sure that the Crimea issue will be resolved, and the will of the Crimean people will be recognized." He also emphasized that the referendum in Crimea took place in accordance with international law.

"There was no annexation or occupation of Crimea. To consider Crimea an annexed and occupied territory is purely political speculation. In the Crimean referendum, all international legal procedures were followed. The referendum was legal. And if anyone has a question about how many percent were "in favor" and how many percent were "against", the next elections will show the authorities almost the same results" - the German parliamentarian assessed.

According to the politician, the Ukrainian government has nothing to do with the lives of residents of the Crimean peninsula.

"If they considered the Crimean people as their own people, they would not have cut off the water supply to the peninsula, taken away pensions, or imposed sanctions. Everything that happens is making the Crimean people increasingly move away from Ukraine. And Crimea is and will never return to Ukraine," the politician concluded.
