The press release of Congressman Eni Faleomavaega strongly criticized China's continuous violations of Vietnam's sovereignty by placing the HD-981 drilling rig in Vietnam's waters on May 2 and deploying dozens of naval ships to support this provocative action.
Then on May 3 and 5, China issued another announcement prohibiting all ships from entering the area where they had just placed the drilling rig, along with a statement that the HD-981 rig would conduct exploratory drilling activities.
A press release by Congressman Eni Faleomavaega confirmed that the HD-981 rig was placed inside Vietnam's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf, only 120 nautical miles from Vietnam's Ly Son Island.
Congressman Eni Faleomavaega expressed his gratitude to Senator John McCain for taking the lead in unequivocally declaring that China's territorial claims in the South China Sea have no basis under international law.
These provocative actions by China are an escalation with the intention of threatening peace and maritime security in the East Sea./.
