The noble gesture of the Olympic swimming champion

August 7, 2012 07:17

Swimmer Daniel Gyurta, who won the men's 200m breaststroke, said he will make a replica of his London 2012 Olympic gold medal to give to the family of the ill-fated Norwegian swimmer Alexander Dale Oen.

Gyurta won the gold medal in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2 minutes 07 seconds 28. Not only that, the Hungarian swimmer also broke the world record in this event, which was previously set by Australian Christian Sprenger at the 2009 world championships with a time of 2 minutes 07 seconds 31.

In a conversation with Hungarian reporters, Gyurta said: "We are good friends. I am sure he will win the gold medal in the 100m breaststroke and that is the best I can do for him."

Dale Oen was considered one of Norway's best hopes for a medal at this year's London Olympics. Dale Oen collapsed at a training center in Flagstaff, northern Arizona, on April 30 and later died at the age of 26.

He is considered the top candidate for the gold medal in the men's 100m breaststroke as well as a formidable opponent of Gyurta in the 200m breaststroke race.

Dale Oen became Norway's hero last year when he won the 100m breaststroke at the world championships in Shanghai, China./.
