Research serving the diagnosis and treatment of blood cancer won first prize

Participating in the 2013 "National University Student Outstanding Scientific Research Award" are works selected from nearly 3,000 scientific works of students from two National Universities.

The awards were selected directly through the form of reports at the Student Science Conference. Student scientific research projects were evaluated and ranked based on criteria of creativity; new ideas; interdisciplinary; basic science and technology content, practical applications and related scientific publications. The Organizing Committee awarded prizes to the best scientific research projects. The award structure includes: 5 first prizes, 3 second prizes and 8 third prizes.

The first prize in the category of “Experimental research on Technology, Engineering, Natural Sciences and Medicine” was awarded to the research project “Synthesis of Naphthol AS-OL butyrate as a substrate for non-specific esterase staining of human leukocytes” by student Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy (VNU Hanoi). This research serves the purpose of diagnosing and treating leukemia.

This group also won a first prize for the research “Design of a propulsion system for an 8-seat river passenger boat using solar energy” by Vuong Hoang Nguyen (HCMC National University). The research calculated, designed and manufactured a simulation of a solar-powered boat to serve riverside tourist areas as a clean energy means of transportation.

The research "Image classification using learned features and handcrafted features" by student Doan Anh Dung (VNU-HCM) won first prize in the group of "Basic theoretical research on Natural Sciences, Information Technology and Computational Science". This research proposes an image classification model that combines handcrafted features with learned features to support the representation of images with complex edge structures. These studies have applications in image search engines, object recognition, landscape image recognition, and handwriting recognition. The work of Doan Anh Dung's group has also been reported at 2 international scientific conferences.

The study “Examining the stability of large commercial banks in Vietnam” by Phung Duc Quyen (VNU) shows that increasing capital from the private sector is the most feasible measure to ensure the stability of banks. This study won first prize in the group of “Research on Economics, Law, Education and Tourism”.

The research on the need to increase the use of websites in public activities at enterprises by student Bui Thi Bich Lan (VNU) was awarded first prize in the group of subjects "Research on Social Sciences - Humanities, Languages ​​and Journalism".

The student scientific research movement of the two national universities has developed strongly over the past 20 years with an independent student scientific work award system. This is one of the characteristics and strengths of the two national universities in the process of developing towards a research university, in which not only lecturers but also teachers and students participate in the creative process.
