(Baonghean) - Anh Son district has nearly 2,000 hectares of alluvial land along the Lam River, which is very favorable for the production of crops. However, every year during the rainy season, the alluvial land area is often flooded, so for a long time, people have only grown two crops of corn per year. That is winter corn and spring corn. In 2014, the People's Committee of Anh Son district directed localities to expand the area of autumn corn on alluvial land along the river.

Corn field on alluvial land of Phuc Son commune.

At the autumn corn field on the alluvial land along the Lam River in Phuc Son Commune, on August 21, I witnessed the corn fields stretching out evenly, the corn stalks taller than a person, the leaves dark green, the corn cobs in the stage of filling the kernels. Mr. Pham Van Thu's family, Hamlet 2, planted 2 sao of corn, confided: This is the first crop of autumn corn planted on the alluvial land along the river, showing that the corn grows well, with few pests and diseases. If the weather is favorable, the autumn corn will be no less than the spring corn.

Mr. Nguyen Van Trang - Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, excitedly said: This autumn crop, Phuc Son planted more than 70 hectares of corn, of which more than 50 hectares were planted on alluvial land along the river. As this was the first crop of corn planted on alluvial land along the river, propaganda and direction encountered many difficulties, because farmers were afraid of working but not having food. Preparing to harvest spring corn, the local Party Committee and government mobilized the entire political system to get involved, assigning each cadre and party member to be in charge of each village and hamlet, propagating and guiding farmers to plant autumn corn on alluvial land along the river, following the direction of the District People's Committee. Based on the district's crop calendar, by mid-June, farmers will have finished harvesting spring corn and immediately started planting autumn corn. At this point, the entire area of more than 50 hectares is in the period of grain filling, and it is expected that by September 10-15, if the corn is not fully ripe, the locality will also direct farmers to go to the fields to harvest and avoid floods. It is estimated that the corn yield of the autumn crop in Phuc Son will be equal to that of the spring crop...

Talking to us, Mr. Nguyen Cong The - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Anh Son district, said: To produce autumn corn on alluvial land along the river, it is necessary to synchronously implement two main factors: Focus on directing the sowing schedule of winter corn last year and spring corn this year 10 - 15 days earlier than every year; at the same time, the district restructures short-term corn varieties, such as: B06, DK6919, SSC 2095... to shorten the growing time. Therefore, autumn corn on alluvial land along the river in Anh Son was sown by farmers from June 15 - 20 and is expected to be harvested from September 10. To evaluate autumn corn on alluvial land along the river, since 2012, the district has directed the planting of 400 hectares in Tam Son, Tuong Son and Duc Son communes. After 2 years of implementation, it has been shown that autumn corn on alluvial land along the river is harvested before the rainy season, with an average yield of 6 tons/ha. Therefore, in the 2014 autumn crop, the district has directed the expansion of the autumn corn area on alluvial land along the river to 1,200 ha, in the communes along the Lam River. During the care process, the autumn corn has grown normally, with even flowering, large ears, and thick, even grains. It is expected that the harvest will be on September 10, with an estimated average yield of 6 tons/ha.

Thus, with the strong direction of the district People's Committee and the well-founded calculation of the district's Agriculture Department, farmers in the communes along the Lam River of Anh Son District will have an additional corn crop this year, the district's corn output will increase by about 7,200 tons compared to before. In 2015, the district will direct 100% of the alluvial land along the river to grow corn in the autumn crop, increasing income for people on the same unit of cultivated area.
