She recalled her trip to Vietnam in July to review progress made since the United States and Vietnam normalized relations 17 years ago.

Trade has grown from virtually nothing in 1995 to nearly $22 billion a year.

She reiterated that the United States and Vietnam have cooperated in many areas, from developing maritime security, improving public health, disaster relief, and education. She said this year is also the 20th year of the Fulbright program, which has brought many current and former Vietnamese leaders to study in the United States.

Nearly 15,000 Vietnamese students are studying in the US, a number that is increasing, enhancing mutual understanding between the two countries.

According to Secretary of State Clinton, in the coming year, the two countries will have more people-to-people exchanges and expand cooperation in other areas.

She said the United States looks forward to strengthening the strategic relationship between the two countries based on mutual respect and a shared desire to build peace and stability across the Asia-Pacific.
