Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has canceled his participation in a Russia-Türkiye summit scheduled for November 25 to discuss Syria, the fight against IS and Cyprus after a Russian Su-24 fighter jet was shot down by a Turkish missile.
Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke by phone with US President Barack Obama to discuss the incident. Both presidents agreed on the “importance of easing tensions”.
However, the Turkish government also said that during the phone call, President Obama emphasized that Türkiye has the right to defend its territory "with the support of the US and NATO".

Another issue of concern is the fate of the Russian pilots on the Su-24 fighter jet shot down on November 23 and two rescue planes sent to the scene in the border area between Syria and Türkiye.
According to General Sergei Roudskoi, one of the two pilots on the SU-24 plane died before landing. The other was taken to a Russian airbase in Syria.
Not long before, a Turkish official confirmed that both Russian pilots were alive and were being treated.
As for the two Mi-8 rescue helicopters sent to the scene where the SU-24 was shot down, one of the two was hit by bullets and forced to land. General Sergei said that a Russian soldier was killed in Syria while participating in the rescue operation of the two pilots on the SU-24.
