(Baonghean.vn) - Speaking at a press conference in Moscow on December 1, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the West had a real opportunity to avoid the conflict in Ukraine, but missed it.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the West had rejected Russian proposals to end NATO's "reckless expansion" and agreed to grant Kiev special security status.

In addition, Foreign Minister Lavrov stressed that many major problems have accumulated in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), accusing the West of denying the opportunity to narrow differences with Russia after the Cold War.

"Taking advantage of its numerical superiority in the organization (OSCE), the West has been trying for many years to privatize it. Or perhaps it is more correct to say that it is trying to carry out a raid to take over the OSCE," Lavrov said.

Foreign Minister Lavrov even asserted that no country has caused more damage to the OSCE than Poland when it held the rotating presidency of the organization. According to Mr. Lavrov, the security space in Europe is disintegrating and the OSCE itself is becoming a marginalized entity.

Earlier the same day, the 29th annual meeting of the OSCE Council of Ministers opened in the Polish city of Lodz. According to senior Polish diplomat Pawel Jablonski, Warsaw did not allow Foreign Minister Lavrov to attend the conference because it believed it was necessary to "absolutely isolate" Russia in the international arena, in the context of Moscow's military campaign in Ukraine./.
