Russian Foreign Minister Says West Failed to 'Ukraineize' G20
(Baonghean.vn) - A senior Russian diplomat affirmed that the G20 Summit statement mentioned war but only in the context of the need to resolve all conflicts.
On September 10, RT news agency reported that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov affirmed that, thanks in no small part to the efforts of developing countries, the West failed to make the G20 Summit in New Delhi revolve around the topic of the Ukraine conflict.
Speaking to reporters on September 10, Lavrov, head of the Russian delegation to the summit, praised the summit host India, saying that the country had helped strengthen the position of countries in the Global South, which had stood up “to defend their legitimate interests,” thereby helping “prevent the West from once again Ukraineizing the entire agenda” of the summit and diverting attention from the pressing issues facing emerging economies.
The foreign minister pointed out that the joint statement “refers to the Ukrainian crisis, but only in the context of the need to resolve all conflicts” in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter.
Mr Lavrov stressed that the G20 must focus on economic and financial issues, praising the hard work of emerging economies, which has prevented the conference from turning into a “politicized club”.
The G20 final statement adopted on September 9 “highlights the human suffering and the additional negative impacts of the war in Ukraine on global food and energy security, supply chains, macroeconomic financial stability, inflation and growth”.
The statement also acknowledged that some G20 members have different views on the conflict between Moscow and Kiev.
Before the statement was released, Reuters reported that the Ukraine section of the joint statement had been a major obstacle because Western countries urged strong condemnation of Russia, but this approach met with opposition from other members.
