Located approximately 55km from Hanoi, the Bo Da Pagoda complex (Tien Son commune, Viet Yen district, Bac Giang province) is one of the famous spiritual tourist destinations in Northern Vietnam.

Bo Da Pagoda, more accurately known as Quan Am Pagoda on Bo Da Mountain or Bo Da Son Quan Am Son Tu, is also called Bo Da Pagoda or Tu An Tu. The pagoda is situated in an auspicious location, to the north of the foot of Phuong Hoang Mountain in the Bo Da mountain range, with the picturesque Cau River in the distance.

According to the Bac Giang Provincial Electronic Information Portal, legend has it that Bo Da Pagoda dates back to the Ly Dynasty (11th century), and underwent major renovations and restorations during the reign of King Le Du Tong (1720-1729) and subsequent periods.

Over the centuries, Bo Da Pagoda has undergone numerous renovations, yet it has essentially retained its ancient architectural features, from earthen walls and pagoda gardens to traditional wooden architecture, showcasing a blend of artistic styles from successive eras, spanning from the 18th century to the present day.

Currently, the Bo Da Pagoda complex includes many large and small structures, among which the four most prominent are Cao Pagoda, Tam Duc Hermitage, Tu An Pagoda, and the stupa garden.

The temple is surrounded by lush green bamboo groves and a system of earthen walls that act as a strong defensive fortress, creating a serene and sacred atmosphere for this destination.

Compared to traditional temples in the North, Bo Da Pagoda has a more unique and distinctive architecture, designed in the style of "inner connection, outer enclosure".

The pagoda was built using natural materials such as fired bricks, tiles, and earthenware. The surrounding walls are made of earth, while the other walls, gates, and some structures are built entirely of rammed earth using the traditional rammed-earth method.

Each architectural element within the complex is exquisitely carved, showcasing a wide range of themes such as cloud patterns, swirling patterns, chrysanthemums, leaf motifs, mythical creatures, the four sacred animals, and the four seasons…

Many pilgrims who have visited Bo Da Pagoda have commented that the pagoda garden is one of the most impressive features. It currently houses 110 pagodas and tombs of varying sizes, all constructed from stone and brick, and sealed with lime mortar mixed with molasses and paper pulp.

This is also the resting place of Zen Buddhist monks who practiced at the temple throughout history.

With an area of nearly 8,000 square meters and 110 pagodas and tombs, the pagoda garden of Bo Da Pagoda is considered the most beautiful and largest among ancient temples in Vietnam.

Within the temple grounds, numerous stone steles, bronze bells, horizontal plaques, and 39 wooden statues from the Le Trung Hung period are still preserved, possessing significant historical and artistic value.

Besides its architectural and aesthetic value, Bo Da Pagoda is also considered a museum of Han Nom heritage in many forms. In particular, one cannot fail to mention the collection of Buddhist scriptures – one of the oldest woodblock-carved scripture collections in Vietnam, with over 2,000 woodblocks.

With its outstanding and unique value in many aspects, Bo Da Pagoda was recognized as a National Monument in 1992. In 2016, the Prime Minister ranked Bo Da Pagoda as a Special National Historical and Architectural Art Monument.

In addition, the Syzygium jambos tree and the Ficus microcarpa tree in the garden of Bo Da Pagoda have also been recognized as Vietnamese Heritage Trees by the Vietnam Association for the Protection of Nature and Environment.

In March 2017, the Bo Da Festival was included in the list of National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. In December 2017, the wooden printing blocks of Bo Da Pagoda were recognized as a national treasure.

Every year, the Bo Da Pagoda Festival is held from the 15th to the 18th of the second lunar month, attracting a large number of locals and tourists from all over to visit and worship, contributing to spreading the historical and cultural values of Bo Da Pagoda and Bac Giang province to friends and tourists both domestically and internationally.
