(Baonghean.vn) - Because they live naturally, clams are considered a nutritious dish during hot summer days. Despite the heat, fishermen in Quynh Luu (Nghe An) still hunt for fat natural clams.
Clams are hunted by fishermen from February to August. On hot summer days, at Quynh Nghia, Quynh Minh, Quynh Luong, Quynh Bang beaches... there are dozens of fishermen going to the sea to hunt for clams. Photo: Viet Hung.
Despite the pounding waves, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa (in Quynh Nghia commune) still holds her tool firmly and moves forward and backward to find clams hidden under the sand. Ms. Hoa said that to find clams, she has to wade far out until the sea water is above her knees or waist level. Every day, she finds about 4 kg of clams, earning from 250,000 - 300,000 VND. From May to July, sea clams grow quickly, so there are many big ones... At this time, people working in the profession all take about 3 hours/session to find them. Because clams live naturally in the sea, the clam meat is tougher and sweeter than farmed clams, so restaurants buy all the clams that fishermen catch. Photo: Viet Hung
"To hunt for clams, we usually go in small groups of about 4-5 people. If anyone finds a clam, they inform each other to come and search together. The way to detect whether there are clams under the sea or not is by feeling with your hands. When you feel the tool collide with an object under the sand, you have found a clam." Every day, fishermen hunting for clams have an average income of 200,000 - 400,000 VND/person. Photo: Viet Hung
The clam hunting tool is very simple, it is a bamboo tube about 2m long, split in half at the bottom, then attached to a thin metal rod bent in a U shape. During the catching process, the fisherman drops the metal rod into the sea, then holds it above and rakes it back and forth until the rod hits an object under the sand, the fisherman uses his hands to scoop up the clams.
