Quynh Luu fishermen donate 400 kg sunfish to the Museum
(Baonghean.vn) -After catching a rare 400kg sunfish, fishermen in Quynh Long commune, Quynh Luu district donated it to the Vietnam Museum of Nature for research purposes.
On August 1, while fishing off the coast of the Gulf of Tonkin,The fishing boat of Mr. Tran Xuan Thanh, residing in Quynh Long commune, Quynh Luu district, caught a strange fish, round in shape, nearly 2 meters long, with both fins being 2.3 meters wide. After learning that it was an extremely rare ocean sunfish, Mr. Thanh immediately carefully iced it and turned the boat back to shore, docking at Lach Quen fishing port.
The caught sunfish was nearly 2 meters long, with both fins measuring 2.3 meters wide.
After docking, Mr. Thanh asked Mr. Bui Van Can, a resident of Quynh Phuong commune, who had donated fish to the Vietnam Museum of Nature, to contact the Museum to donate the precious fish for research and display. That same afternoon, Mr. Trinh Xuan Son, Deputy Director of the Museum, was present to receive the fish.
Transporting sunfish for preservation and research
The scientific name of the sunfish is Mola mola, belonging to the pufferfish order (Tetraodontiformes). This is a fish species listed in the Vietnam Red Book.
This is not the first time Quynh Luu fishermen have donated rare fish to the Museum. Previously, some fishermen from Quynh Long and Quynh Phuong communes who had caught ocean sunfish also contacted the Vietnam Museum of Nature to donate them for research and display purposes.
