From mid-March is the herring fishing season for fishermen along the coast of Nghe An. When the sun just rises above the sea, it is also the time when the rafts of fishermen from Dien Kim, Dien Hai, Dien Thanh communes... return to shore one after another after a night of fishing. Every time the raft reaches the shore, relatives come out to help pull the raft to the sandy area about 150m above the water surface to remove the herrings from the net. As many herrings as they can find, traders compete to buy them right there. Photo: Xuan Hoang |

According to fishermen, the net used to catch herring is a small mesh net, 8-10m high, more than 1,000m long. Herring is a species that lives in surface water, often in schools, when fishermen see fish they start to drop the net. Photo: Xuan Hoang |

The herring season starts in March and lasts until the end of May. Mr. Pham Van Loi, a fisherman in Dien Kim commune, said that herring swim in schools, 2-5 nautical miles from shore. We usually go from 2am and start to go ashore to remove the fish at around 7am. At the beginning of this year's season, there were not as many herrings as in previous years. A big trip would yield 70-100kg. The current selling price is from 11,000-13,000 VND/kg, earning millions of dong. Photo: Xuan Hoang |

The herrings are shaken out of the net one by one, falling onto the sand, then the people collect them. The job seems simple, but there are days when there are so many fish that their hands get tired from picking them up. Photo: Xuan Hoang |

Every time the rafts reach the shore, traders compete to order all the products, at a common price. To make the fish collection work faster, traders also support fishermen in collecting fish. Photo: Xuan Hoang |

The herrings are cleaned on the spot. Ms. Nguyen Thi Sen, a trader, said that the herrings are caught at night and are not kept on ice, so they are still fresh. Fresh herrings are not only sold in nearby markets but are also packed and transported to Hanoi and some northern cities for consumption. Photo: Xuan Hoang |
