Canadians protest Chinese company's acquisition of Nexen

The Canadian government on December 7 approved the acquisition of Nexen Petroleum Company by China National Offshore Oil Corporation for $15.1 billion.

However, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper affirmed that he would reject similar deals in the future, except in some special cases. He declared: “CanadaIt has taken many years to de-nationalize sectors of the economy so we do not want to see our companies taken over and controlled by foreign governments.”




Opposition parties and many peopleCanadahave criticized the decision because they fear the deal will put domestic resources at risk of falling into Chinese hands. The New Democratic Party (NDP) said Mr. Harper had not adequately explained the impact of the deal on national interests and security.

NDP member Hélène LeBlanc told Beacon News that her party polled people across the country and the majority of respondents opposed the deal. According to the NDP, more than 80,000 people sent letters and emails to parliament.Canadaprotest CNOOC's acquisition of Nexen.
