(Baonghean.vn) - Although many shrimp and fish ponds in Dien Chau, Hung Hoa (Vinh City), and Do Luong have not yet reached harvest season, people have accepted losses to harvest to avoid storm No. 4.

Selling shrimp to escape the storm

Mr. Dau Ngoc My in Hamlet 4, Dien Trung Commune (Dien Chau) has 2 shrimp ponds with an area of 4,500 m2 that have been raised for 4 months, the shrimp weight reaches 60 shrimp/kg. Although it is not yet harvest time, but because of storm No. 4 making landfall in Nghe An, Mr. My has to sell well, accepting a low price of 120,000 VND/kg.

From the afternoon of August 28 to the morning of August 29, Mr. My sold 1 ton of shrimp. Currently, Mr. My is waiting for traders to come to continue harvesting. Mr. My shared: If there is no storm, he will raise the shrimp for another 20 days before selling. At that time, the shrimp will reach 45 shrimp/kg, without being forced to lower the price.

In addition to selling shrimp, Dien Trung residents also focus on protecting shrimp ponds that have just released shrimp fry in the area outside the dike. Mr. Nguyen Van Dong in Hamlet 6, Dien Trung Commune has a 2,000 m2 shrimp pond outside the dike, which has just released shrimp fry for 20 days. Mr. Dong said that he has prepared more than 100 m of net to surround the pond, to prevent rising sea levels from flooding the pond. Currently, Mr. Dong is mobilizing human resources to collect machinery, repair generators, and prevent power outages to run the aerator in the pond.

Mr. Dau Ngoc Hoa - Director of Dien Trung Livestock Cooperative said: In Dien Trung commune, there are 16 shrimp ponds outside the dike that have to sell quickly due to storm No. 4. People accept low prices to harvest, to avoid damage when the storm hits. With a selling price of 130,000 VND/kg, shrimp farmers are losing money. Normally, the price of shrimp now must be over 160,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Le The Hieu - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dien Chau district said: Regarding aquaculture, Dien Chau district directed key shrimp farming localities: Dien Trung, Dien Thinh to propagate and mobilize people to use nets to cover 10 hectares of newly released shrimp in areas outside the dike. For shrimp ponds that can be harvested, people are encouraged to harvest before the storm hits.

In Hung Hoa commune, a key shrimp farming area in Vinh city, people are also speeding up the harvest before the storm hits. The whole commune has 110 hectares of second-crop shrimp for harvest, and about 50% of the area has been harvested. Although selling well, shrimp prices in Hung Hoa are still higher than in other localities, currently fluctuating from 140,000 - 150,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Duong Xuan Tham - Agricultural Officer of Hung Hoa Commune said: The reason why shrimp prices are stable is because Hung Hoa shrimp market is mainly consumed in Vinh City, always sold out within the day and not sold inter-provincially like other localities. We are currently calling on people to quickly harvest the remaining area to avoid losses.

Currently, the whole Do Luong district has 1,400 hectares of water surface for fish farming. Of which, 647.5 hectares are raised in reservoirs and irrigation lakes; 538.8 hectares are raised in ponds and lakes, the remaining area is raised on the first, second and third crop rice fish farming areas.

In the fish farming areas in the rice fields, farmers have deployed nets to transport fish fry to places to avoid flooding. For fish fry, the number of fish pulled up with large weight will be sold, priced at 50,000 VND/kg. For fish weighing 0.5 kg or less, they will be collected and transferred to a safe place to be used as fish fry for the third crop.
