A 23-year-old Pakistani asylum seeker, Naved B, drove a 25-ton truck into a crowd at a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people and injuring nearly 50 on the night of December 19. After the crash, he jumped out of the truck and fled the scene.

A witness saw the suspect outside the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and followed him on a dark road for about 2 km, updating police on the suspect's whereabouts every minute and second via phone, according to Mirror.

Police spokesman Winfrid Wenzel said the suspect wanted to seek shelter in the dark and police received information from a witness who was tailing the suspect from a "safe distance". The suspect was eventually arrested near the Victory Column monument.

"With the help of witnesses, we were able to arrest the suspect. The bravery of the people also gave us courage," Wenzel added.

The suspect is believed to be living in a refugee camp at Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport and is seeking asylum in Germany. He is known to police for a history of petty crimes.
