“I assume it will be a small private service,” spokesman Rick Miller told AFP, adding that no other details had been released.
NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, current and former astronauts and many important guests will attend Armstrong's memorial service at Washington National Cathedral.
Armstrong died on August 2 at the age of 82 from complications of heart surgery. The late astronaut grew up in a rural area.
The Apollo 11 commander entered history textbooks on July 20, 1969, when he became the first man to set foot on the Moon and famously said, “That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
