Wanting to help her family members, a woman urged her son to declare her dead to claim a $180,000 life insurance payout.

On July 12, Daily Mail reported that Arafa Nassib, unable to afford expensive furniture, planned to incite her son Adil Kasim to claim that she had died in a traffic accident in Zanzibar, in order to claim a life insurance payment of $180,000.

With everything done, Mrs. Nassib fled to Ottowa, Canada. When the plot was exposed, the insurance company called the police. Investigation revealed that Nassib was still alive.

The court heard that as well as wanting to repay the $102,000 debt, Nassib wanted the money to help family members in Tanzania illegally immigrate to the UK.

Nassib and her son claim that she had an accident on an African island in April 2016. A friend of theirs there provided false documents related to her death to the insurance company.

Adil Kasim was arrested in December 2016. He admitted that he and his mother had planned the scam. Because he was only 17 when he committed the crime, Kasim was only required to serve 12 months of community service.

Nassib was arrested when he returned to the UK in February 2017. Arafa Nassib, 48, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison at Birmingham Crown Court after faking his own death and defrauding a life insurance company of $180,000.
