People who want to drive automatic cars will not have to learn to drive manual cars.

After the Circular comes into effect, learners who only want to take the automatic driving test do not have to learn to drive a manual car.

According to the Vietnam Road Administration, the policy of training and testing for basic automatic driving licenses has been unanimously approved by the Departments and Divisions under the Ministry of Transport. Currently, the Vietnam Road Administration is drafting a guiding Circular, which will be submitted to the Ministry of Transport in June, and is expected to be issued in July and take effect from next September.

After the Circular takes effect, learners who only want to take the automatic driving license test will not have to learn to drive a manual car. The study program for the automatic driving license test will be shortened, with study time reduced by about 60 lessons compared to the current program.

Learners have the right to choose to study and take the regular driving license exam as they do now or to study and take the automatic driving license exam only. The training cost for the automatic driving license will be calculated and decided by the driving training and testing centers and then announced publicly. Upon completing the course and passing the test, the learner will be granted a driving license of the same type as the current driving license, but on the back will be a note that says “only allowed to drive automatic vehicles”.
