On the morning of March 23 (February 14 of the lunar calendar), there was a thunderstorm in Quy Chau and Que Phong districts, accompanied by thunder as if waking up the sleeping heaven and earth. Thai people often look forward to this moment because according to ancient beliefs, this is when a new year truly begins. It has become a custom that in the morning after the first thunder of the year, shamans of the "mo mon" branch (the Thai people have many different types of shamans) hold a ceremony called "drinking wine with thunder). The ceremony is held at the shaman's house and is often attended by neighbors and people who have been treated by the shaman, or who have come to "ask for children" (similar to the Vietnamese custom of praying for children). These people are called the shaman's "adopted children". Photo: Huu Vi

The ceremony takes place around the jars of wine placed in the outer room where the ancestral altar is. Before drinking the wine, the shaman performs a ritual of washing the sword with wine and decorating the jars. Flowers are often decorated on the jars of wine, not only to make the ceremony more joyful and solemn. This also represents the wish for lush trees, bountiful crops, and a favorable human life. Ruou can often appears in most spiritual ceremonies of the Thai people in the Northwest of Nghe An. In the thunder celebration, the wine is offered to the gods, who passed on the profession to the shaman and previous generations. Photo: Huu Vi

Shaman Lang Van Diep (76 years old), the host of the ceremony in Hoa Tien 1 village, Chau Tien commune, Quy Chau district - has been practicing shamanism for 30 years, said: "Every time there is thunder at the beginning of the year, I have to perform this ceremony, I have never missed a year." This is also the occasion for the shaman to perform a ceremony to replace the neckband or wristband for the adopted children. Before tying a new thread for the person receiving the ceremony, the shaman often performs some actions called exorcism. The ceremony to replace the neckband or wristband is completed after the recipient of the ceremony is given a cup of wine by the shaman and some of it is poured onto the hair. Photo: Huu Vi
