5-7 seater high-chassis cars such as urban SUVs, mid-size Crossovers or MPVs... are more popular with car consumers in Vietnam than traditional sedans.

The tastes of car consumers in Vietnam are changing significantly in early 2023 compared to previous years. Instead of being loyal to traditional sedans with many amenities, in the first 2 months of 2023, Vietnamese people are tending to switch to choosing 5-7 seater high-chassis cars.

Sales of sedans are lower than urban SUVs, mid-size Crossovers or MPVs.

Last year, sedans including B, C, D... were the best-selling car lines in the Vietnamese automobile market with sales of nearly 91,000 vehicles, while SUVs in general reached nearly 86,000 vehicles, Crossovers accounted for nearly 34,600 vehicles and multi-purpose MPVs accounted for nearly 55,300 vehicles.

However, entering 2023, when the new sales period has only passed 2 months, the sales results announced by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) and TC Motor have shown a change in the car selection trend of Vietnamese people. High-chassis 5-7 seater cars such as urban SUVs, mid-size Crossovers or MPVs... are being preferred by car consumers in Vietnam over traditional sedans.

Urban SUV "reigns" in 2022: Toyota Corolla Cross is the best-selling segment.

Specifically, after the first 2 months of 2023, B-class sedans are no longer the best-selling car segment in Vietnam. Instead, most Vietnamese car buyers often choose urban SUVs, mid-size Crossovers or MPVs.

Data isAdolescentSynthesized from sales reports, in the first 2 months of 2023, urban SUVs were the vehicle line with the highest sales in the market with 7,197 vehicles sold. Meanwhile, B-class sedans ranked 2nd with 6,835 vehicles. Ranked 3rd was the mid-size Crossover with 6,308 vehicles and the next positions respectively belonged to the 7-seat family MPV segment (reaching 5,882 vehicles) and pickup trucks (reaching 2,693 vehicles). The D-class sedan segment ranked at the bottom of the table with a total of 827 vehicles sold after the first 2 months of 2023.

Which mid-size crossover will sell well in Vietnam in 2022?

In fact, by model, Hyundai Accent - a representative of the B-class sedan segment is leading the market in sales. However, if considering the whole segment, B-class sedans are still behind urban SUVs in terms of sales volume. The reason partly comes from the obvious change in the tastes and needs of car consumers in Vietnam, besides, it must be admitted that the growth rate in terms of models and quantity of segments such as urban SUVs, mid-size Crossovers or MPVs is faster than traditional sedans.

Urban SUVs, mid-size Crossovers or MPVs... are being preferred by car consumers in Vietnam over traditional sedans.

In just the past 2 years, the B, C, D class sedan segment has not had many new models appearing, on the contrary, some car models have temporarily stopped distribution, others have left the market. Meanwhile, the urban SUV segment has continuously welcomed new names such as Kia Sonet, Mazda CX-30, Hyundai Creta, Nissan Kicks... The mid-size Crossover segment has added Ford Territory, the 7-seat family MPV has Hyundai Stargazer...

Small family car in 2022: Vietnamese people are still "crazy" about Mitsubishi Xpander

Compared to traditional sedans, urban SUVs, mid-size Crossovers or MPVs are not inferior in terms of equipment and amenities, while the interior space is spacious and airy, allowing more people to be carried. This is one of the factors that makes many individual or business customers choose urban SUVs, mid-size Crossovers or MPVs for family use, or even for passenger transport services or technology taxis.

Urban SUVs, mid-size Crossovers and MPVs are growing rapidly, meeting the needs of Vietnamese customers.

After many years of dominating the Vietnamese automobile market, 2023 could be the beginning of the decline of traditional sedans when the development speed of vehicles such as urban SUVs, mid-size Crossovers or MPVs is too fast and suitable for the needs of car consumers in Vietnam.
