Wife who poisoned police lieutenant colonel faces death penalty
Allegedly killing her husband "barbarically" for "despicable motives", Ms. Lien was prosecuted under a penalty framework with the highest penalty being the death penalty.
Nearly a year after poisoning her husband, traffic police lieutenant colonel Tran Xuan Chuyen (51 years old) to take possession of their inheritance, defendant Du Kim Lien (45 years old) will be brought to a mobile trial by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court on March 22. The trial will be presided over by judge Vu Thanh Lam.
According to the indictment, Lien and her husband have been married for more than 20 years, have two sons and live in District 6. Recently, Lien secretly borrowed money from many people without her husband’s knowledge. When the debt reached 1.3 billion VND and was being pursued, she came up with the idea of killing her husband to get the money to pay off the debt.

On March 11, 2012, knowing that Mr. Chuyen would come home late from drinking, she bought 10 sleeping pills, a syringe and medical gloves and brought them home to hide in order to carry out her cruel plan. That same evening, when Mr. Chuyen complained of hunger, Ms. Lien mixed sleeping pills into a glass of milk for her husband to drink.
The next morning, seeing that Mr. Chuyen was still alive, the wife continued to buy sleeping pills for her husband to take... Still unable to carry out her intention to kill her husband, on the morning of March 13, 2012, she poisoned Mr. Chuyen again with several syringes containing liquid pesticide. After that, Ms. Lien called her two children and said "Dad died of a stroke".
In order to cover up the crime, Lien pretended to be in pain and quickly buried her husband's body. Suspecting the lieutenant colonel's death was unusual, the police launched an investigation. Authorities found many syringes and pesticides right in front of the victim's house.
