Harvesting eggs at Nguyen Huy Tien's chicken farm. |
Nguyen Huy Tien was a worker at Construction Company No. 2, who had worked in Russia to make a living. When the company changed its mechanism, jobs became more and more difficult, Tien quit, gathered his capital to rent 2.2 hectares of land in Cong Am field, Hung Tien commune (Hung Nguyen) to set up a livestock farm, that was in 2006. When he first started his business, his capital was still small, his experience was limited, he only dared to raise 500 chickens and a few dozen sows. Ten years of pursuing the profession with many ups and downs, but through that he accumulated experience, honed his courage to become more and more steadfast. Tien said that there were years when 50 sows in the pen had asthma, no medicine could cure them, and in the end they had to be liquidated. Each pig cost 10 million VND to buy, but when sold to traders, it cost only a few hundred thousand VND. Then during the bird flu outbreaks, his farm was not affected by the epidemic, but there was another "reputation" that was much more harmful: eggs could not be sold. Every day, chickens lay 7-8,000 eggs. If they don't sell them for just one week, there will be no more room in the warehouse to store them and they will have to sell them off. Sometimes, there are so many that they have to be fed to fish...
At times like that, Tien is not discouraged. He still has to take care of the chickens properly, even more carefully to have enough strength to withstand the weather and epidemic. Every day, the chickens eat tens of millions of dong of feed, which still has to be invested. According to experience, if the amount of feed is reduced, the chickens will stop laying eggs, the ovaries will shrink, and the recovery time will be very long. Therefore, a full diet must still be maintained. Also according to Tien's experience, the market develops according to a sinusoidal amplitude, egg prices go down and then go up, farmers must know how to seize this opportunity to prepare well to regain what they lost in investment. Just like that, for the past 10 years, his farm has never been without chickens.
Currently, the farm is diversifying its products: chicken eggs, fertilized eggs, hatching and selling chicks, and selling hatching eggs. He also breeds fighting cocks to supply eggs and meat to the market.
To develop sustainable livestock farming, he is currently shifting to using biological products in livestock farming to create clean products for the market. The opportunity came to him at the end of last year when a friend who works on a livestock farm in Nam Dan had a herd of sick pigs that could not be cured, and had to invite an officer from the Institute of Animal Husbandry to treat him. Tien invited him to "examine" his flock of chickens. Before that, his chickens often suffered from diseases such as edema, asthma, etc. Following the advice, Tien supplemented their diet with biological products, without using antibiotics. Since then, the chickens have been healthy. For more than 6 months now, he has added probiotics to the chickens' feed every week to prevent disease.
Through monitoring, he found that the chickens were healthier, egg production was stable, and egg quality was improved. He contacted the Department of Animal Husbandry of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to send his egg samples for analysis. If the egg samples met the clean egg standards, he would apply for a certificate to build a brand and supply to supermarkets. He believed in this because according to consumers, the quality of his eggs was much better than eggs bought on the market. After testing, if the quality was good, he would set up a feed factory to use biological products to replace growth hormones and other chemicals in feed. He is also quietly preparing the next steps to build a clean egg brand in Nghe An.
After 10 years of pursuing the profession, from a small initial capital, Nguyen Huy Tien has a property in hand worth nearly ten billion VND. Combined with the accumulated experience, it is the condition that helps him realize his dream of creating a clean egg brand in Nghe An. His experience over 10 years of livestock farming is to be persistent, have scientific knowledge, capital and a bit of courage, know how to calculate and seize opportunities.
