Former Principal of Quy Nhon University sentenced to 4 years in prison
On November 27, the People's Court of Quy Nhon City (Binh Dinh) sentenced Mr. Tran Tin Kiet (former principal of Quy Nhon University) to 4 years in prison, and Nguyen Ngoc Anh (former head of the Financial Planning Department of Quy Nhon University) to 2 years for the same crime of "Abusing position and power while performing official duties".
After 3 postponements, on November 26 and 27, the People's Court of Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh Province, held a first-instance trial and sentenced the defendants: Tran Tin Kiet, 62 years old, former Principal of Quy Nhon University, to 4 years in prison and Nguyen Ngoc Anh, 54 years old, former Head of the Planning and Finance Department, Quy Nhon University, to 2 years in prison for the crime of "Abusing position and power while performing official duties". In particular, defendant Tran Tin Kiet was sick and was being treated at An Binh Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, so he submitted a request for trial in absentia.

According to the indictment of the People's Procuracy of Binh Dinh province, from the 1999-2000 school year to the 2007-2008 school year, the two defendants Tran Tin Kiet and Nguyen Ngoc Anh took advantage of their assigned duties and responsibilities to illegally collect 5 fees from more than 22,000 students with a total amount of more than 18 billion VND, and spent nearly 1 billion VND on individuals in the Board of Directors and departments of the school. In addition to this case, from 2000 to 2006, Tran Tin Kiet also committed the act of "Intentionally violating state regulations on economic management, causing serious consequences" and was sentenced to 15 months in prison by the Court of Appeal - the High People's Court in Da Nang, but the sentence was suspended at the end of 2011.
Quy Nhon City People's Court also ordered the two defendants Tran Tin Kiet, Nguyen Ngoc Anh and 20 officials in the Board of Directors, departments, lecturers and staff of the School to return the entire amount of nearly 1 billion VND that was divided illegally./.
