After many years of living precariously on hillsides and mountain slopes and having to endure dozens of storms, flash floods, landslides... the poor people of Tuong Duong and Quy Hop districts never dared to dream of a solid house. Only with the help of the Red Cross did the dream of a storm-proof house come true.

Standing in a spacious wooden stilt house with a bright red tile roof, Mr. Lo Van Toan, over 60 years old, in La village, Luong Minh commune, still cannot believe that this is his house. Just a few months ago, his family had to struggle to live in a temporary house because the old house was almost completely destroyed by the flood in 2009.

The Provincial Red Cross Association cut the ribbon to inaugurate Mr. Vi Van Mui's house in Chau Ly commune (Quy Hop).

The good news came to his family when the Red Cross Society of Tuong Duong district informed the commune about a project to support the restoration of storm-resistant houses. When this information was received, the People's Committee of Luong Minh commune deployed it to each village and organized a meeting to consider the subjects.

After waiting for the assessment of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, in July 2010, his family was approved and the local authorities started construction. With 30 million VND in support from the Red Cross, along with help from the village in terms of labor and some of the family's wood left after the flood, the house was completed only two months later.

Mr. Toan's storm-proof house is just one of 50 houses that the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies supported in Nghe An province after storms No. 8 and No. 9 in 2009. This is a project for poor households whose houses were collapsed, washed away or damaged after the storm.

Receiving this project, the Nghe An Red Cross Society had to select from 145 completely collapsed houses and over 15,000 other damaged houses across the province to find the 50 most disadvantaged families in the 4 communes of Luong Minh, Thach Giam (Tuong Duong district) and Chau Ly, Chau Hong (Quy Hop) - the most severely damaged communes to support. The special thing about this project is that in addition to financial support to build solid houses, the Support Unit, the Red Cross Society, also hired architectural consultants from DMF Company to go to each house to advise on construction to ensure that the houses are solidly built and strong enough to withstand storms, floods, tornadoes, and landslides.

Successful project Ms. Bui Thi Mai - President of the Provincial Red Cross Society said: The project implementation process encountered many difficulties because the communes with the project are all very far from the center, many places are forest roads so traveling and transporting construction materials is very complicated. However, the project was implemented quickly and effectively thanks to the help of volunteers and people in the villages. Households also tried very hard to contribute and contribute more money to build more spacious houses.

As one of the key areas that is often affected by natural disasters, building storm-proof houses is extremely necessary. The project to support the restoration and construction of storm-proof houses has been successfully implemented, not only for its social significance but also for its practical role in preventing and combating storms and floods. From these storm-proof house models, people in localities, especially mountainous districts, can learn and build solid houses for their families.
