A team of scientists at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) in Melbourne, Australia, said on January 10 that they had discovered exactly how the human body processes insulin, which could help find more active and effective treatments for patients with diabetes.

The results of this study have now been published in the journal Nature (UK).

Australian scientists working with international researchers from the US, UK and Prague have discovered how insulin molecules bind to a protein in human cells, something scientists have been trying to solve for the past two decades.

The team was excited to reveal the first observation of three dimensions of the insulin molecule combined with its receptor.

Understanding how insulin binds to its receptors will provide the basis for developing new insulins to treat diabetes.

There are currently about 1 million Australians with diabetes, with about 100,000 new cases per year.

A new discovery could help hundreds of thousands of Australians with diabetes avoid the need for daily insulin injections, as a new insulin therapy could be on the horizon./.
