The prize committee said the two scientists were honored for "the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to give rise to pluripotent stem cells."

The first Nobel Prize was announced at 11:30 a.m. Swedish time (9:30 a.m. GMT, 4:30 p.m. Vietnam time today, October 8).

Previously, the Swedish press had speculated that the two men were likely to receive the prize for their research on cell nuclear reprogramming.

This process causes the mature cells to give rise to pluripotent stem cells, which can be used to produce any type of tissue in the body.

Swedish radio speculated that the winner could come from the field of epigenetics, which studies the effects of nature on growth and how genes respond to the external environment.
