Thanh Chuong farmers earn 10 million VND/sao from shallots
(Baonghean.vn) - After 6 months of planting and caring, many farmers in Thanh Van commune (Thanh Chuong, Nghe An) are excited because this year's shallots have a good harvest and good price; 4 times higher than last year.
While focusing on harvesting 2 sao of chives, Ms. Le Thi Ty in Hamlet 3 Thanh Van shared: “Previously, this land was mainly used to grow corn, the yield was low, and the price was cheap, so I switched to growing chives; the income from chives is much higher. The characteristic of chives is that they are short-term, from planting to harvesting is only about 6 months. From the 2nd month, both leaves and bulbs can be pulled out to sell, so harvesting is spread out with very high efficiency.”

Ms. Ty is just one of many households in Thanh Van commune growing chives for commercial purposes. Due to the increasing value of chives with each crop, this year, Thanh Van commune has planted more than 10 hectares, with large households growing about 5 sao, and small households growing over 1 sao.
According to Mr. Nguyen Nhu Thien - a member of Thanh Van Cooperative, this year the weather is favorable so the onions grow well. Although they have been pruned and sold for sale since before Tet, the average yield at harvest time is still high, from 250 - 300 kg/sao; currently the selling price at the field is 35 - 40,000 VND/kg, each sao is estimated to be about 10 million VND. With an area of 10 hectares, Thanh Van people can earn about more than 1 billion VND.

With the advantages of being an easy-to-grow plant, with few pests and diseases, drought-resistant, not requiring much investment and suitable for sand dunes, people are confident with this variety of plant. "To make people feel more secure, the cooperative has provided good varieties and linked up with agents in Vinh city and wholesale markets in the southern provinces to find sources of product consumption," Mr. Thien added.

In the context of agricultural products always facing the situation of "good harvest, low price", remembering that last year, shallots only cost 10,000 VND, now with the price of 35 - 40,000 VND/kg at the present time is a joy.BI also shared that at the end of last year, onion seeds were up to 120,000 VND, and during Tet it was 70,000 VND/kg.
In practice, people have grown onions using two main methods: planting on fishing nets and planting directly on the ground. The difference between these two methods is that planting on nets is easy to harvest, because the onions are on the net, when harvesting, just lift the net and pour the onions into the packaging; but the disadvantage of onions grown on nets is that because they have little root system, they spoil quickly.
Planting onions directly on the ground takes more time to harvest, but the bulbs last longer; planting onions directly on the ground because they have many roots can also be pulled out and sold gradually without having to wait until harvest./.
