Musician An Thuyen: 'Unfinished' loves
Today (July 9), we will say goodbye to musician An Thuyen when we take him to his resting place. His sudden passing on the afternoon of July 3 has left behind an inconsolable grief for his family, relatives, friends, colleagues, students and the public who loved him. In Vietnamese music, he left a "void" that is difficult to fill. And for himself, the talented musician still has many "unfinished business".

Perhaps like many artists of the same era, people like musician An Thuyen do not have the concept of “retirement”. Therefore, at the age of over 60, he still has a lot to contribute to Vietnamese music.
Play this game, ready to sell the house
If during his years as principal at the Military Culture and Arts School (1993 - 2009), he made many contributions to building and improving the quality of teaching, selecting many excellent students to train future artists who are both talented and dedicated to their profession, then in recent years, there are two things that musician An Thuyen has devoted a lot of effort to: the music project for children and the opening of the Vietnam Business Culture Development Association.
After 5 years of hard work with colleagues at the Hanoi Music Association, the first volume of the Vietnamese Children's Song Collection Fairy Melodies edited by musician An Thuyen was officially released in 2014. Also in 2014, the Vietnam Business Culture Development Association was established, with musician An Thuyen elected as President.
With these two events, few people know that the musician had to “fight” on many fronts, but first of all, it was the front in his own thoughts. “Why do I, who am “purely” an artist, have to think about developing corporate culture?
Because only when the economy is strong can culture develop. Developing corporate culture will also open up opportunities to develop arts and culture. I have thought a lot about this project and have determined that to play this "game", I am ready to sell my house" - he once shared with me about the project to build the Association when it was still in its "infancy".
Worried about young people singing foreign music
Meanwhile, Fairy Melodies - the first "massive" book series ever to fully collect children's songs by all musicians from all over the country over the past 100 years - is like a "private corner" in his soul for children.
He jokingly said that he was bored with working with adults, now working with children is more fun and more interesting, but really, listening to him share the idea of making a "children's song dictionary", one can see that the musician is very concerned and worried about the cultural life of future generations.
“Every day I see that most of the children only know how to sing foreign songs and I am extremely worried. I wonder, where are the children's songs? I know many people do not write because of lack of money and there are also people who write but cannot publish them so they have to keep them in a drawer. That is why the collection of children's songs was born with the wish "Let's join hands so that Vietnamese children can sing Vietnamese songs" - musician An Thuyen pondered.
Not only writing and leaving his works on paper, musician An Thuyen has recorded songs written for children into CDs as a spiritual gift for future generations. What is special is listening to songs for preschool and kindergarten with extremely simple themes such as Na, Mit, Khe, Thi, Cu Ca Dot but written in the style of modern music such as pop, rock, R&B, you can see how much musician An Thuyen loves children, how he understands their current spiritual life. Composing music for children, musician An Thuyen is both a thoughtful grandfather and a musician who is "forever young". That is also why, at a more mature age - students who have studied with him or have had contact with musician An Thuyen, always feel proud to have a teacher who always pays attention to today's youth.
Also after the collection of Vietnamese children's songs (a set of 6 volumes, expected to be fully released in 2015), musician An Thuyen also wishes to continue to return to the "frozen" project Canh en tuoi tho - a program gathering new compositions about children, broadcast on VTV. He shared his wish: when the Vietnam Business Culture Development Association comes into operation and grows, it will also be able to support the difficulties of such projects. And that is the meaningful result when he is determined to build the Association.
But now, as musician Nguyen Cuong shared, the Association is lacking a dedicated and creative leader like musician An Thuyen. And perhaps, there are many musical projects that musician An Thuyen has not announced yet that are still unfinished before his sudden departure.
