Hung Yen longan is currently preparing to enter the harvest season; in which, the longan area with area codes for export to the US is being carefully cared for by garden owners in anticipation of the export date in mid-August.

In the key longan growing areas in Hung Yen, there are currently two area codes granted for export with an area of 20 hectares of longan growing households in Ham Tu commune, Khoai Chau district and Hong Nam commune, Hung Yen city. According to the farmers, this area will be ready for harvest in about 20 days. The participating households have been trained and supported with pesticides and longan preservation bags.

Since being granted the area code, the production process has been closely monitored, pests on longan trees have been monitored and prevented in a timely and technical manner, ensuring that longan fruit grows well. Households participating in the export longan area have actively implemented production processes according to the instructions of specialized agencies, producing fruit that is abundant, uniform, and beautiful. Farmers are focusing on care according to VietGAP procedures, applying comprehensive pest control measures, especially using biological pesticides to create safe products. Mr. Bui Van Tam and households growing longan for export in Hong Nam commune said that, identifying this as a very important customer, many households have invested in high-quality fertilizer sources from inorganic and organic fertilizers, and the care work is also higher and more careful.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ha, a farmer in Ham Tu commune, said that compared to the traditional method, exporting longan is much more difficult and laborious. People have to prune the branches more freely, and if the longan tree bears many fruits, they have to cut off the bad bunches. Compared to the traditional method, the productivity of exported longan will be reduced, but the product appearance will be more beautiful. According to garden owners, the estimated yield of exported longan is about 10 tons/ha.

To further tighten the longan production process to ensure export standards, specialized agencies of the province and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development are actively following gardeners to guide and advise longan growers on technical measures and regulations to achieve the set goals. In Ham Tu and Hong Nam communes, officers of the Post-Import Plant Quarantine Center I, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also recommended that farmers need to choose longan trees with quality fruit, and on the tree, they also need to choose each bunch, large bunches of fruit, beautiful appearance to cover the fruit with biosafety bags.

Currently, Khoai Chau district and Hung Yen city have imported biosafety fruit bags to distribute to people for preservation when longan is ripe, instructing households on how to wrap all bunches of longan fruit before harvesting according to the procedures required by the US. At the same time, functional units have developed a detailed plan from now until the end of the season to assign and closely direct the implementation such as: bagging fruit 21 days before harvesting, analyzing pesticide residues in longan fruit 7 days before harvesting, and inspecting plant quarantine objects 10 days before harvesting to meet the requirements of demanding markets like the US and creating conditions for businesses to export longan.

Ms. Doan Thi Chai, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hung Yen, said that the Department of Industry and Trade of Hung Yen and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development are coordinating to prepare for organizing trade promotion activities, approaching businesses with experience in exporting fruits in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to promote and create conditions to expand the export market of longan./.
