Japan develops new sensor system to measure heart rate

Researchers at Hiroshima University in Japan have developed a new sensor system that can detect heart rate by amplifying the heartbeat from the skin surface on the back.

According to the research team leader, Professor Tsuji Toshio, the system uses an oscillator to detect tiny vibration signals emitted when the heartbeat is transmitted to the muscles and bones on the back.

The sensor is encased in 2cm thick polyester fabric to filter out high frequency noise such as voices and vibrations from moving vehicles.

Additionally, the microphone in the sensor system can convert the signals detected by the oscillator into heart sounds - the sound produced when the heart beats and pumps blood to the organs in the body. Therefore, even without a sensor attached to the body, the system can still record the average heart rate using an electrocardiogram.

Car seats equipped with this sensor system can provide early warnings, helping to prevent accidents caused by drivers falling asleep or having a stroke./.
