A consortium of Japanese companies including Tokyo Gas, Japan Petroleum Exploration and Nippon Iron and Sumitomo Metals is studying the project.
If approved, the pipeline would take five to seven years to build and cost up to $5 billion, reducing the cost of importing gas transported by ship.
Japan is currently actively seeking new energy sources to meet part of its energy shortage after shutting down nuclear power reactors in the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Currently, only 2 out of 50 nuclear reactors have reopened./.
