Japan demands investigation into US military plane crash
A US HH-60 helicopter crashed in Ginoza village, Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa.
On August 5, Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera requested a comprehensive investigation into the crash of a US helicopter in the southernmost prefecture of Okinawa.
Speaking at a press conference in Tokyo, Mr. Onodera said:“This is an unfortunate incident. We are asking the US authorities to immediately provide relevant information. We will urge a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident as well as take necessary measures to prevent and stop similar incidents.”

Minister Onodera also confirmed that three of the four crew members on board the helicopter were safe.
At 4:30 p.m. on August 5 (local time), an American HH-60 helicopter crashed in Ginoza village, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. However, no local residents were injured or killed in the accident.
The military camp in Ginoza Village is managed by the US Marine Corps and is a firing and landing range for military aircraft. The Okinawa prefectural government and residents have repeatedly requested the Japanese government to move the US military camp out of the area, especially the Futenma Air Base, due to security concerns. However, Japan and the US continue to deploy many aircraft there.
Okinawa is estimated to be home to more than 70% of US military bases in Japan. Earlier, on August 4, two more US Osperey aircraft left the US Iwakuni Air Base in Yamaguchi for the Futenma Air Base despite strong opposition from local residents./.
