Japan has technology to produce cheap fuel from straw.
Japan's Kawasaki Heavy Industries has developed technology to produce ethanol from straw at a cost of just 40 yen (about $0.45) per liter, on par with the cost of producing this biofuel from sugarcane in Brazil and elsewhere.
Kawasaki said the technology has low production costs because it only uses hot water to decompose raw materials, without relying on sulfuric acid and enzymes like conventional methods.

The company has been conducting research and experiments on ethanol production since 2009 at a plant in Japan's Akita prefecture and is now planning to sell biofuel production equipment for cars globally.
Ethanol is an alcohol-based fuel, usually produced by fermenting and distilling starchy cereals or cellulose-containing plants. In recent years, the production of ethanol from biomass materials such as straw, firewood, etc. has had very positive results. Thanks to its plant origin and not too complicated preparation technology, this type of fuel is considered the most suitable to replace the petroleum source that is at risk of being depleted.
Ethanol biofuel brings many benefits such as energy security, low cost, reducing CO2 emissions, creating more jobs for farmers and protecting agricultural land./.
