The adjustment of Japan-US defense policy is in preparation for the high-level talks between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Barack Obama scheduled to be held in Washington later this month during Mr. Abe's visit to the US.

Before going to Japan, on April 6, Mr. Carter attended a speech at the University of Arizona in Tempe, about the Obama administration's strategy to strengthen relations with Asia.

Referring to the reform of the Japan-US defense cooperation policy that clearly defines the roles of the US military as well as the Japanese military, Mr. Carter expressed his strong desire that this will open a completely new standard for Japan-US defense cooperation. He also emphasized the importance of negotiations related to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement between the two countries.

After his visit to Japan, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter will travel to South Korea to reaffirm the US's strong commitment to South Korea's security and discuss regional issues where the US is implementing its "pivot" strategy.

This is Mr. Carter's first visit to Japan and South Korea since he took office as US Secretary of Defense last February./.
