Japan, China agree to seek breakthrough in resolving territorial dispute
Japanese and Chinese government officials agreed on October 11 to hold bilateral vice-ministerial-level talks soon to seek a breakthrough in the dispute over the sovereignty of the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said.
The dispute has caused relations between the two countries to fall into a state of high tension in recent months.
The agreement was reached at a meeting in Tokyo between Shinsuke Sugiyama, director general of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau of the Japanese Foreign Ministry, and Luo Zhaohui, director general of the Asian Affairs Bureau of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
The territorial dispute over the islands in the East China Sea has escalated after the Japanese government bought three of the five main islands of the archipelago from a private Japanese owner a month ago./.
