America and Russia November 27, 2024 13:34

Nghe An students have the opportunity to access full scholarships from the Russian Federation, as Russia annually awards 1,000 scholarships to Vietnamese students.

On the morning of November 27, the Department of Foreign Affairs chaired a working session with the delegation of the Vietnamese Embassy in the Russian Federation and universities in the Russian Federation.

The delegation included Ms. Mai Nguyen Tuyet Hoa - First Secretary, in charge of the Education Department, Embassy of Vietnam in the Russian Federation; accompanied by representatives of leading Russian universities.

Providing information on the social situation in Russia, Ms. Mai Nguyen Tuyet Hoa said that in 2024, Russia will welcome many international delegations to work, including many Vietnamese delegations.

Russia and Vietnam have signed a training cooperation agreement for many years. In particular, Russia annually grants Vietnam at least 1,000 scholarships. However, in the past 5 years, the number of Vietnamese students receiving these scholarships has not met Russia's expectations.

Currently, the number of Vietnamese students studying in Russia is 5,000, but only 2,000 of them are under the Agreement between the two countries. From 2021 onwards, the number of students under this Agreement will only reach 400-500 targets.

Frankly admitting the reality, one of the reasons for the decrease in enrollment rate is that Vietnamese students do not have full access to information about opportunities, and in addition, the demand for studying abroad in Russia is low.

Russian scholarships for Vietnamese students under the Agreement include full tuition waivers and dormitory fees similar to those for Russian students. In addition, Vietnam will provide living expenses for students studying in Russia, insurance coverage, and round-trip airfare.

Up to now, Russia is the country that grants the most treaty scholarships to Vietnam; second is Hungary with 200 scholarships/year.

The Vietnamese Embassy in the Russian Federation is very interested in making the most effective use of these 1,000 scholarships by introducing them to many localities so that students and officials know about the study opportunities in the Russian Federation. Currently, the Vietnamese community in Russia is about 80,000 people.

Russia is a country with a long history of special training in the fields of basic science, applied science, mechanical engineering, medicine, art and even new fields of study such as information technology, nano, energy...

Referring to one of the barriers that makes students hesitate to choose to study in Russia is learning the language, according to Ms. Mai Nguyen Tuyet Hoa, at Russian universities, there is a 1-year preparatory language course before officially entering the study program at the bachelor's and master's level. Regarding this language learning, the Russian Government completely exempts tuition fees.

Not only training Vietnamese students, Russia also supports retraining of cadres through short-term courses. These training programs usually last 2-3 months, taught in Russian or through an interpreter.

Informing the working delegation in Nghe An, the leader of the Department of Foreign Affairs said that Nghe An ranked 12th out of 63 provinces and cities in terms of high school exam results in 2024, and is the educational center of the North Central region.

Nghe An has established a cooperative relationship in many fields with Ulyanovsk province (Russia). Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted of Nghe An signed an educational cooperation agreement with Ho Chi Minh High School 76 of Ulyanovsk province.

Proposing to the working group, Nghe An province hopes that Russian teachers at Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted will have the opportunity to be trained at universities in Russia. In addition, the working group is requested to share short-term training courses for Nghe An staff and students. In particular, develop specific programs and plans, and have a handbook with information on majors of each Russian university, helping students easily access and make appropriate choices.

At the meeting, representatives of leading Russian universities such as: University of Science and Technology MISIS, Moscow Polytechnic University, Moscow Power Engineering University, Moscow Geodesy University, provided a lot of information about the training programs and strengths of each school.
