The prolonged heat wave has caused many lakes and dams in Nghe An province to dry up, affecting production and life. Ve Vung Lake in Dong Thanh Commune, Kim Thanh has a capacity of 22 million m3water, irrigating over 400 hectares of rice in 7 communes of Yen Thanh district. Due to the continuous heat wave, the water level in Ve Vung reservoir has only reached over 30% of its capacity. (Photo taken on June 11). Photo: Van Truong

Mr. Le Van Hong - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Yen Thanh district said: In this summer-autumn crop, Yen Thanh district planted over 12,800 hectares of rice, of which the reservoir area is over 2,500 hectares. The district has nearly 200 reservoirs, currently the water level only reaches 30 - 50% of capacity, of which, there are many local reservoirs.water depletionPhoto: Van Truong

Nghe An has 1,061 reservoirs, as of June 11, 673 reservoirs reached over 50% capacity, the remaining reservoirs reached 30 - 40%, of which, many reservoirs are dry, at risk of losing the summer-autumn crop if it does not rain. Photo: Van Truong

In Do Luong district, Mr. Tran Ngoc Thuan - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Do Luong district said: The whole district has 122 reservoirs, currently, the water level is only 30 - 40%, of which, many reservoirs are dry in Hoa Son, Dai Son, Giang Son Tay communes... the reservoir area irrigates 3,000/8,100 hectares, currently, over 100 hectares are suffering from drought in the communes in the reservoir area. In Nghia Dan district, the Sanh village reservoir in Nghia Minh commune is dry, causing people to not dare to plant rice seedlings for over 100 hectares of rice using water from this reservoir. Photo: Minh Thai
Nghia Dan district manages 180 lakes and dams, the water level in the lakes and dams currently averages about 50 - 60% of capacity. However, in the middle of summer with hot weather, many lakes are dry at the bottom. The immediate solution is to actively save water, clear sewers and canals, and anticipate the rains to effectively deploy production. Photo: Minh Thai
Nghe An Irrigation Department recommends that localities need to have drought prevention plans for each region, strictly manage water resources, prevent leakage and water loss in reservoirs, and have specific plans to arrange irrigation schedules such as rotational irrigation and water saving. National Assembly Delegates of Nghe An Province agreed to adjust the investment policy for a reservoir project in one of the driest areas in the country.
