Given the unique nature of this school year, starting in August 2024, the Department of Education and Training will make some revisions and additions to the student excellence competitions, such as provincial-level, national-level, and other competitions at the grassroots level.

Specifically for 9th-grade students, in the first year of implementing the new General Education Program's exam, in addition to traditional subjects such as Mathematics, Literature, English, French, Civic Education, and Informatics, they will take exams in Natural Sciences (replacing Physics, Chemistry, and Biology) and History and Geography (replacing History and Geography).

Specifically, the Natural Sciences subject will consist of three independent exam sections:

+ Natural Science 1 content: Includes general Natural Science content and elective content: Topics: Energy, Earth, and Sky.

+ Natural Science 2 content: Includes general Natural Science content and elective content: Topic: Matter and Transformations of Matter.

+ Natural Science 3 content: Includes general Natural Science content and elective content: Living things.

The History and Geography exams consist of two independent sections:

+ History and Geography 1 content: Includes general content for History and Geography and elective content belonging to the History sub-discipline.

+ History and Geography 2 content: Includes general content for History and Geography and elective content belonging to the Geography sub-discipline.

This was also the first time the exam included Natural Sciences and History-Geography subjects. Although the number of subjects was reduced, the number of students participating in this year's provincial excellent student exam was only about 50 fewer than last year.
