The village school welcomes a 'season of joy' at the Provincial Excellent Student Examination.

The provincial-level 12th-grade student excellence competition concluded with much joy for Bac Yen Thanh High School. This is the only "village" school to have a student achieve the top score in category A. The school also won 3 first prizes, an achievement that very few schools have attained.

The Physics team from Bac Yen Thanh High School participated in the 2024 Provincial High School Physics Competition for 12th-grade students without the support of their teacher, Mr. Ngo Sy Thang, who had directly coached them. During his illness and hospital stay, Mr. Thang's biggest worry wasn't the students' knowledge but their consistent performance.

After 150 minutes of testing, while other candidates expressed regret and disappointment because some questions were not as good as expected, student Vo Van Thanh remained quite calm.

Even before the final results were announced, after reading the exam questions and hearing about Thanh's approach, teacher Ngo Sy Thang believed that this year's competition would yield positive results. "This year's provincial-level gifted student exam is based on the new general education curriculum; it's more difficult but doesn't heavily emphasize mathematical operations. Instead, the exam emphasizes application, which is Thanh's strength. Looking at the questions, I believe she will do well," Thanh's teacher shared.

As Vo Van Thanh's physics teacher for three years in high school, teacher Ngo Sy Thang said that Thanh was a "potential" student of the school from the 10th grade because he had previously achieved the title of excellent student at the provincial level in the 9th grade.

Throughout the teaching and mentoring process, what impressed me most about Thanh was her eagerness to learn, her love of exploration, and her very "practical" approach to studying Physics.

"

Thanh tried to apply all the theoretical knowledge taught in class to real-world situations. For any problems, after class she would immediately ask her teacher until she fully understood, even if it was past midnight.

Teaching students like these, even though some of their questions are a real headache to answer, brings me great joy.

Before participating in the Provincial Excellent Student Examination, Thanh and the other members had to go through a rather long period of preparation and selection.

The most intense period of accelerated study is the month before the exam, with a packed study schedule lasting from 2 PM to 7 PM every day.

Throughout the exam preparation process, Mr. Thang and his students acknowledged that this year's exam was very stressful. Sharing his thoughts on this, Mr. Thang added: "The team was formed in 10th grade, but the final list wasn't finalized until the beginning of 12th grade. This is also the first year implementing the exam under the new curriculum, so everything from learning the new exam structure, building exam question resources, and practicing for the exam was very rushed."

Before this year's exam, we also determined that there would be no familiar test questions like in previous years. Instead, the tests will be highly application-oriented, requiring students to understand and grasp the subject matter thoroughly and to be able to apply theory to practice.

With 18.13 points, surpassing 325 other candidates in the Physics exam in Group A, Vo Van Thanh achieved the highest score, winning first prize and becoming the top scorer in this year's exam.

Although her score was quite far from that of the candidates with closer scores, Thanh said she regretted that she had given an incorrect answer to a small question (part C, question 2). She also lost points on the short answer in the multiple-choice section, even though it wasn't a difficult question...

Thanh's score in this exam also surpassed her previous "records" from exams like the school and cluster exams. Regarding her studies, exam preparation, and high determination for the gifted student competition, Thanh said: "There's no such thing as luck; to achieve high results, you need to be diligent, hardworking, and have a suitable learning method."

Even though I came from a difficult background (my father was a farmer and my mother was a cultural officer at the commune level), I was passionate about studying Physics and loved to explore and discover. Later, that passion was further fueled by my teachers, who imparted even more new knowledge to me.

Dedication and responsibility

In addition to the First Prize, the top student in Physics was also awarded...Provincial Excellent Student ExaminationThis year, Bac Yen Thanh High School is delighted to have won 2 first prizes and 3 second prizes in Biology.

Among the teams that won top prizes in this year's competition, the Biology team achieved a remarkable feat with all five participating students winning prizes, including two first prizes and three second prizes. This is also the school's highest achievement in this subject in many years. Most of the award-winning students from the Biology team come from farming families facing many difficulties.

Sharing her joy at winning first prize, Nguyen Thi Quynh, a student in class 12A1, said: "When I started studying Biology, many friends told me that it was a difficult subject, with a lot of theory and not suitable for female students. But I was lucky to meet a dedicated teacher with a very engaging teaching style. From his lessons, we became enthusiastic and fell in love with Biology."

Having taught at Bac Yen Thanh High School for over 25 years, teacher Phan Duc Hanh, a biology tutor, says this is the happiest exam season for him because all his students who participated in the competition won prizes, and high prizes at that.

"

When selected to coach the team, each teacher feels very proud, but alongside that comes pressure and responsibility towards their students.

If the students don't achieve high results, it means the teacher hasn't fulfilled their duty...

According to Mr. Hanh, the first and most important thing for successful exam seasons is to select the right team, and the most crucial element is selecting students who are "motivated".

"In terms of resources, our school is at a disadvantage because the students come from disadvantaged areas, far from the city center. However, they have a strong desire to excel in their studies, as this is the shortest path to future success. Through accompanying our students, the teachers must also be serious and dedicated to their profession, willing to make sacrifices for their students, and constantly learning and improving their professional skills," shared teacher Phan Duc Hanh.

With the success of this year's exam, Bac Yen Thanh High School has continued to write another academic year with many outstanding achievements.

According to Principal Nguyen Ba Thuy: "Despite many difficulties, our school always creates conditions for teachers and students to develop their abilities. In addition, the school always has policies to encourage and reward teachers and students promptly so that they have the motivation to strive."

"

These achievements are the result of tireless effort and hard work, and they will give the school more confidence to continue to successfully complete the tasks set for the academic year, striving for excellence in teaching and learning.
