I have known about the General's exploits since early on, especially the great victory at Dien Bien Phu. The first time I met Comrade Vo Nguyen Giap was in February 1966, during a visit to Vietnam by the Japanese Communist Party delegation while the Vietnamese people's resistance war against the US was raging fiercely.

I always remember that visit - a new starting point of solidarity in fighting between our two Parties and in memory of Comrade Vo Nguyen Giap during his lifetime. I would like to send him my farewell greetings with sadness at the loss of an old comrade."

Dear comrades,

We are deeply moved to hear of the passing of Comrade Vo Nguyen Giap. We would like to send to you, and through you, to the communists, workers and people of Vietnam, our sincere condolences and the brotherly solidarity of the Portuguese communists.

The memory of Comrade Vo Nguyen Giap, a beloved son of the Vietnamese people and a leading figure of the international communist and revolutionary movement, will forever remain in the minds of the people as an example of an enthusiastic communist and a patriot. He - with simplicity, courage and unshakable revolutionary will - devoted his whole life to the cause of liberating Vietnam and Indochina from colonial oppression and imperialist invasion and to the cause of unification and building a socialist society in his Fatherland.

The name of Vo Nguyen Giap, a companion of President Ho Chi Minh, will forever be associated with the historic victories over French colonialism and North American imperialism, glorifying communist projects and values and proving that no matter how many sacrifices are required in the resistance against class exploitation and national oppression, a united and determined people will certainly be invincible.

As a leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam and an inspirational military strategist, Comrade Giap made an enormous contribution to the universal cause of workers and peoples all over the world. His noble example as a soldier fighting for the right of peoples to choose their own path, for peace and socialism will never be forgotten.

With best wishes, we would like to send our greetings to you, comrades.
