After finishing 12th grade, he weighed only 23kg, was 1.25m tall, and his family was very poor. With determination and will, Danh overcame all difficulties, studied well, and passed the entrance exam to the Hanoi Academy of Finance with high scores. When he received the notice from the Academy of Finance, Danh almost had to give up his dream of going to university because his family did not have the money to send him to Hanoi to enroll.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang - Vietnamese expatriate in Houston - Texas - USA contacted by email and asked a friend named Le Van Thang - from Thanh Chuong, currently living and working in Ho Chi Minh City to personally transfer some money to Danh to help him with his studies.
Dr. Dao Nguyen - Vietnamese expatriate in Maryland - USA also contacted Danh and promised to transfer 200 USD to Mr. Hoang Van Bai (Danh's father) to help the family.
Ms. Pham Thi Xuan Le and Ms. Tran Thi Huong in Hanoi both expressed their desire to help Danh by lending him 300,000 VND per month without interest. After graduating and finding a new job, he must repay 300,000 VND per month.
A reader named Nguyen Ha Mi promised to help Hoang Van Danh with 5 million VND.

On September 6, with the help of the Thai Son Commune Youth Union, Hoang Van Danh went to Hanoi to complete the admission procedures. Knowing the information through the newspaper, teacher Nguyen Thi Nhung - a French teacher at the Academy of Finance - came to see Danh and promised to help him with his food expenses during his university years. After that, teacher Nhung also asked the Academy of Finance to exempt Danh from all tuition fees.
