Many children hospitalized after Quinvaxem vaccination
After being vaccinated with Quinvaxem, dozens of children in Tien Giang had to be hospitalized for fever monitoring. Some cases had rashes but their health has stabilized.
On October 26, the Tien Giang Provincial Department of Health decided to temporarily suspend Quinvaxem vaccination in Cai Lay district because many children had fever and rashes after using this 5-in-1 vaccine. Previously, 10 children were taken to the hospital by their parents for observation on the night of October 25.
By the afternoon of the same day, 22 more children had fever after being vaccinated with Quinvaxem in Cai Be, Go Cong Tay, Go Cong Dong, Tan Phuoc districts, My Tho city... The children were given cooling baths, fever-reducing medicine by the hospital and their health has stabilized.
Mr. Tran Thanh Thao, acting Director of Tien Giang Department of Health, said that in addition to Cai Lay district, other districts and cities in the province are continuing to vaccinate children with Quinvaxem vaccine. Health workers and parents of children are in regular contact with each other to closely monitor the progress of vaccinated cases.
"Thousands of doses have been injected in the past few days and the rate of children with mild fever is less than 5%, so parents should not be too worried. The reason for the temporary suspension of vaccination in Cai Lay is because the health sector is cautious. On October 27, the Department of Preventive Medicine (Ministry of Health) went to Tien Giang to check. If there are no problems with the vaccine, Cai Lay will continue to vaccinate," said Mr. Thao.
Nearly half a year ago, the Ministry of Health decided to temporarily suspend the use of Quinvaxem vaccine in the expanded immunization program when five children died after vaccination, four of which were concluded not to be caused by the vaccine. After that, the World Health Organization announced that the test results of the vaccine batches sent by Vietnam all met the prescribed standards.
Quinvaxem vaccine was introduced into the Expanded Immunization Program in Vietnam in June 2010 under the aid program, used to prevent diseases: whooping cough, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B and pneumonia, purulent meningitis caused by Hib bacteria. This vaccine is used in 34 countries around the world, injected into children at 2, 3 and 4 months of age.
