The spokesperson confirmed that schools in Leipzig all received emails with the same content threatening violence on the morning of October 17.
Leipzig police said the threat was a serious one and quickly deployed security forces to the schools. The spokeswoman also left open the possibility that more schools could be affected by the threat.
The incident occurred in the context of Germany increasing security across the country, especially at airports, train stations and crowded areas after a series of horrific terrorist attacks that occurred in the country recently.
Recently, on October 11, German Federal Police also had to evacuate and block off a train station in the town of Rastatt, in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg, Southwest Germany, due to receiving a bomb threat in this area.
