Five to six loud explosions were heard in Tripoli early on the morning of August 29, shortly after a NATO plane circled over the capital.

Explosions were heard shortly before 1am (2300 GMT on August 28) as rebels stormed the city and celebrated their victory over forces loyal to leader Muammar Gaddafi, firing guns into the air, AFP reporters reported.

After the explosions, rebel gunfire also suddenly stopped for a few minutes, bringing an unusual silence to Tripoli, before rumbling again.

Before that, Tripoli had experienced a truly dark night when the electricity was completely cut off, the only light in the night was the fire spitting from AK47s or from the cannons resounding here and there throughout the city.

Libyan capital residents have been left without electricity and water after the National Transitional Council (NTC) moved to Tripoli. Meager food and water supplies have been cut to serve rebel leaders.

Residents in many parts of the city say they have been without water for the past five days. Telephone and internet service have been cut off due to the lack of electricity. Food prices have skyrocketed due to shortages.
