To increase the productivity and quality of peanuts, Chinese farmers have used sea sand to cover peanut fields. The following are experiences in growing and processing fresh peanuts that bring high economic efficiency of farmers in Zhejiang province, China.

“Every year we transport a portion of the sand from the beach here,” said Li Guogen, from the Daishan County Agricultural Technology Promotion Station in Zhejiang. “First, we dig a hole, then we sow the seeds and cover it with sand.”

The soil in this area is mainly sandy, however, instead of transporting more soil, farmers here add sand to the soil. According to Chinese agricultural engineers, sea sand is very airy. In addition, sea sand also contains some trace elements such as phosphorus and potassium, which help peanuts grow well.

The peanut variety that farmers in Dai Son district grow is called Bach Sa No. 6. This peanut variety is often grown in sandy areas, its outstanding feature is that each tuber usually has two seeds. The outer shape is small and short, but the outer shell is white. Bach Sa peanuts have large seeds, round shape, delicious flavor, slightly salty because they are grown in fields covered with sea sand.

Here, after harvesting peanuts, farmers will wash them, then marinate them using traditional methods, boil them, and finally dry them. Also because of the special way of growing and processing peanuts, farmers here have created their own peanut brand, which is Sea Sand Peanuts.

Mr. Truong An Phuong, Peanut Production Cooperative of Dai Son district, talked about the way the cooperative processes peanuts that he is the head of: “After harvesting, the peanuts are still fresh, still retain water and aroma. We will wash them, marinate them with spices, then boil them, so that the peanuts will absorb the spices, and taste better.”

This method of processing fresh peanuts seems very simple, but it gives the peanuts here a special flavor. After processing, the peanuts are also sold at a higher price. Usually, each kilogram is sold on the market for 27-36 yuan. Currently, this type of peanut is consumed in many places, and the supply is always unable to meet the demand.

To develop the peanut production industry, Dai Son district also established cooperatives, combining production facilities and farming households to form a professional production chain. After harvesting, peanuts are processed and consumed in many places across China, bringing economic benefits to farmers.
