Who should absolutely not go to the gym?
Recently, there have been many cases of mistakes leading to death during gym training. So, who should avoid going to the gym to prevent unforeseen consequences?
Many tragic accidents occur because of gym workouts.
Gym workouts are a popular choice for many people looking to improve their health and physique. However, recently, many people have suffered injuries, and some have even died, while practicing this sport.
At the end of 2016, Mr. NVĐ, 40 years old (Thanh Xuan, Hanoi), collapsed and died suddenly during a workout. According to his family, Mr. Đ had only been going to the gym for two months. Before starting the gym, Mr. Đ was in normal health, with no signs of illness or disease. However, it had been a long time since Mr. Đ had had a regular health check-up.
Previously, in 2015, a rare accident occurred at a gym in Binh Duong City during a weight training session. Nguyen Gia Khanh (34 years old) died instantly on the bench after a 28kg horizontal barbell fell across his neck.
Most recently, in Thanh Hoa, a male student unfortunately fell while working out at the gym. Due to severe neck injuries, the victim died before reaching the hospital.
According to Dr. Nguyen Van Phu, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Sports Hospital, everyone who engages in physical exercise, regardless of the level, faces potential risks. Besides the health benefits, disease prevention, and personal goals such as a beautiful physique, a relaxed mind, and stress reduction, it's important to acknowledge the potential side effects of exercise. Therefore, exercising under appropriate and scientific conditions is essential for everyone involved in health training, especially in gym workouts.

Who shouldn't go to the gym?
Dr. Phu stated: "According to the principles of Sports Medicine, any condition can be exercised as long as the intensity, frequency, and duration of the exercise are appropriate. The same applies to gym workouts; everyone can still exercise, but to achieve the fastest adaptation and best results, one must pay attention to their body and health."
Dr. Phu also added that gym training combines three elements: strength training exercises; endurance strength training exercises; and exercises to increase flexibility. Due to these specific characteristics, the following groups of people should not, or are not suitable for, gym training:
ButPeople with respiratory illnesses should not go to the gym.For example, people with a history of asthma, even if their condition is stable after treatment, should not go to the gym. This is because the very conditions of exercise can trigger endogenous asthma attacks and cause asthma relapses.
ButPeople with a history of cardiovascular disease should not go to the gym.According to Dr. Phu, besides those with heart disease currently under treatment, there are some cases such as: patients with acute rheumatic fever that has complications affecting the heart without their knowledge, or those who have shown signs of cardiovascular problems since childhood but are unaware of them... These individuals normally show no symptoms of heart disease but only reveal them when they exert themselves almost to the maximum. Specifically, they experience arrhythmias, shortness of breath, and are very prone to complications.
ButPeople with metabolic disorders such as:High blood sugar and blood lipid levels can lead to complications such as hypoglycemia, hypotension, or heart rate or breathing irregularities during exercise.
ButPeople with a history of musculoskeletal disordersor conditions such as neuromuscular disorders, myasthenia gravis, degenerative spinal disease, rheumatoid arthritis, spondylitis, joint inflammation, etc.
Dr. Phu shared: "For people in this disease group, we don't object to exercise; in fact, we encourage it. But how to exercise effectively? This requires close collaboration between three parties: the doctor, the patient, and the trainer, to receive accurate advice on their health condition before participating in any exercise program."
