Remedies for sciatica
Oriental medicine considers the lumbar region to be the kidney's area, and lower back pain is a sign of weak kidneys. The kidneys govern the bones, meaning all types of bone and joint pain are related to the kidneys.
Low back pain is a common disease in life, people over 50 years old have at least had low back pain once or twice. Low back pain if pain radiates down to the buttocks, back of the thighs can down to the ankles is called sciatica.
The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in the body. Each vertebra contains a spinal cord that gives off a pair of nerves - one that receives sensation, one that commands muscle movement in the corresponding area. To make it easier to visualize, imagine: 7 cervical vertebrae will have nerves that control the neck and arm area, the thoracic and abdominal vertebrae will control the thoracic and abdominal area, 5 lumbar vertebrae control the lumbar region, buttocks and legs, and the activities of the pelvic organs. Thus, the sciatic nerve is created by the lumbar spinal cord.
There are many causes of sciatica, but over 80% are due to disc dislocation. The disc is located between two vertebrae, to help the vertebrae move easily (rotate, bend, and tilt), the disc has an external structure of cartilage and an internal structure containing mucus. Other causes include: spinal degeneration, vertebral collapse, spondylitis, vertebral tumors, vertebral tuberculosis, osteoporosis, and bone glass. Some external injuries to the vertebrae cause compression of the nerves next to the vertebrae, causing pain, including in pregnant women, the uterus gradually enlarges, causing increased pressure in the pelvis, and the back pain increases in the last months of pregnancy.
Oriental medicine considers the lumbar region to be the kidney's organ, and lower back pain is a sign of weak kidneys. The kidney governs bones, meaning all types of bone and joint pain are related to the kidney. The kidney stores essence, and if the essence is weak, it also causes lower back pain.
The kidneys are related to the bladder, which is the relationship between the internal organs and the yin and yang. The bladder meridian runs from above the eyes through the head to the back of the neck, then runs in two lines about 2cm from the spine, down the buttocks to the back of the thighs, to the heels of the feet. Thus, the section from the waist down to the heels and toes coincides with the path of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve has musculocutaneous nerve branches running on the outside of the thighs and calves.
There is also a gallbladder meridian in the body, which runs from the corner of the eye up to the head, around the ear, down to the ribs, down to the buttocks, the outer thighs and calves. Thus, the lower part from the waist down to the outer calf of the gallbladder meridian is similar to the path of the musculocutaneous nerve of the sciatic nerve.
Rehmannia glutinosa
So when preventing back pain and sciatica, we need to pay attention to kidney disease prevention and gallbladder disease prevention. Treating back pain and sciatica also means treating kidney disease and gallbladder disease if the nature of the pain is as described above.
Kidney disease prevention:
- From a young age, when sitting to study, children need to be reminded to sit in the correct posture with a straight back.
- Do not carry heavy loads for long periods of time or lift heavy loads in an incorrect position.
- Should swim and do appropriate sports.
- Limit sudden heavy pressure on the spine.
- Do not have excessive sex because "promiscuity can cause kidney failure".
When you have pain in the lumbar region: You should increase swimming, practice standing with your head down and touching the ground with both hands every day. Or lie on your back, stretch your legs, fold both legs up to your stomach, practice regularly and slowly, practice twice a day for 30 minutes each time.
Use one of the following leaves to heat up, spread it on the bed, then lie down and press on the lumbar region: mugwort leaves, piper lolot leaves, perilla leaves, and náng leaves... You can also heat up one of the above leaves and spread it on a piece of newspaper, sit upright with your feet on it, when the leaves have cooled, heat them again to do it a second time, do it 1-2 times a day depending on the conditions.
