Remedies for sciatica
Oriental medicine considers the lumbar region to be the kidney's area, and lower back pain is a sign of weak kidneys. The kidneys govern the bones, meaning that all types of bone and joint pain are related to the kidneys.
Low back pain is a common disease in life, people over 50 years old have at least had low back pain once or twice. Low back pain if the pain spreads down to the buttocks, the back of the thighs and down to the ankles is called sciatica.
The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in the body. Each vertebra contains a spinal cord that gives off a pair of nerves - one that receives sensation, one that commands muscle movement in the corresponding area. To make it easier to visualize, imagine: 7 cervical vertebrae will have nerves that control the neck and arms, the thoracic and abdominal vertebrae will control the thoracic and abdominal back, 5 lumbar vertebrae control the lumbar region, buttocks and legs, and the activities of the pelvic organs. Thus, the sciatic nerve is created by the lumbar spinal cord.
There are many causes of sciatica, but over 80% are due to a herniated disc. The disc is located between two vertebrae, to help the vertebrae move easily (turn, bend, and tilt), the disc has an outer structure of cartilage and an inner structure containing mucus. Other causes include: spinal degeneration, vertebral collapse, spondylitis, vertebral tumors, vertebral tuberculosis, osteoporosis, and vitrification. Some external injuries to the vertebrae cause compression of the nerves next to the vertebrae, causing pain, including in pregnant women with an enlarged uterus, causing increased pelvic pressure, and the back pain increases in the last months of pregnancy.
Oriental medicine considers the lumbar region to be the kidney's organ, and lower back pain is a sign of weak kidneys. The kidneys govern the bones, meaning that all types of bone and joint pain are related to the kidneys. The kidneys store essence, and if the essence is weak, the lower back will also be painful.
The kidneys are related to the bladder, which is the relationship between the internal organs and the yin and yang. The bladder meridian runs from above the eyes through the head to the back of the neck, then runs in two lines about 2cm from the spine, down the buttocks to the back of the thighs, to the heels of the feet. Thus, the section from the waist down to the heels and toes coincides with the path of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve has a musculocutaneous nerve branch running on the outside of the thighs and calves.
There is also a gallbladder meridian in the body, which runs from the top of the eye to the head, around the ear, out to the ribs, down to the buttocks, the outer thighs and the calves. Thus, the lower part from the waist down to the outer calf of the gallbladder meridian is similar to the path of the musculocutaneous nerve of the sciatic nerve.
